The Triple Goddess – The Cycles of Life

The worship of the Goddess in ancient cultures reflects the phases of the Moon. Her archetypes live on within our hearts and minds. Our lives, as women, proceed through the stages of the Triple Goddess.

~ the Maiden ~ the Mother ~ the Crone ~

We begin our journey as the Maiden. This stage represents purity, youth, freshness and all that is new and full of awe and wonder.
During this stage we have our health, our innocence, our idealism and our entire future ahead of us. Our every breath is braced in anticipation! As the Maiden we see beauty and the wonder of nature in all things. The Maiden is represented by the New Moon and the Waxing Moon.

Time passes quickly and we move beyond this state of idealistic innocence. At age 27.5 we come upon our Progressed Lunar Return. This marks a very different cycle life.

By the time we have reached this phase we have encountered our first disappointments, disillusionment and a certain amount of pain. Maturity pushes us to step into a new role. It is now the time for us to support new life and accept the responsibility of our actions and the results of our decisions. We may or may not become biological mothers during this cycle, but that is not the issue. Our maturation has expanded our view of the world and of those around us. We are no longer infatuated with the newness of our own life, we have experienced some of the bitter edges and understand the need to offer support and love to others.

In our growing maturity we embrace life in the this second phase as we become the Mother. This is a phase of power and fullness which matures us deeply and fully. We now are interested and able to protect and nurture others. The archetype of the mother is the fullness of womanhood. The role of the Mother is one of power, she is the creator of life, the giver, the comforter, the protector, the lover. During this phase we learn confidence, patience, self discipline and responsibility. The Full Moon represents the power and grace of the Mother.

As we approach our Second Progressed Lunar Return (age 55) we move into the final cycle of the triple Goddess. The most difficult to accept and the most misunderstood, we now become The Crone, The Wise Woman, The Hag.

It can be a shock to find oneself suddenly entering this final phase of the cycle, becoming the Crone. Our culture does a poor job of honoring the wisdom of time and age. It is easy to feel that we have disappeared, that others no longer see us.

However, with our own acceptance and understanding, our job in this cycle is to educate the culture, to teach others, and our own value is part of what we must teach. We have much knowledge to pass on, our years on this planet have brought us face to face with the internal wisdom and mysteries of time. The stage of the Crone Goddess symbolizes wisdom and deep transformation. The Crone must care for The Maiden and The Mother. It is time to embrace the inner Wise Woman, the Crone, the Hag, the keeper of Mysteries.

As we move into this cycle and embrace our internal Crone, we recognize the deep value of our stories, we see that all the years of our experience have taught us much. It is time to take seriously our role as teacher, as wise counsel. The Crone is the Elder, the great teacher, the Waning Moon. As we now face another dimension beyond this life, it is our job to pass on the wisdom we have gathered from all the years as Maiden and as Mother. We must hold no bitterness, we must release our attachments, we must learn to move gracefully into age, wisdom and the ultimate coming of death.

It is time to tell our stories with pride and with humility.

The Beauty, the Hope & the Challenge of Idealism

As a child I learned that idealism was something to strive for, something wonderful. That if only we could hold an idealistic vision of ourselves and the world around us it would somehow protect us from the reality of a difficult life.

It was an ongoing joke in my family that our mother wore rose colored glasses and blinders to keep the view of difficulties out of her site. She was never able to see what was right in front of her or all around her.
I never thought of idealism as a defense mechanism until the topic came out in my astrological studies with Noel Tyl.
Think about the connections between the Sun, Mercury and/or Venus. How does this connection play out in an individual’s life? Expand this idea and bring Jupiter into the mix as well. What behavior or attitudes can we anticipate?
When our logic, our perception and our ability to reason (Mercury) are warmed by or combined with the heat of our vital creativity (Sun) our experience becomes one of positive hope (idealism). The Sun is so bright and so warm; if it is making close contact with Mercury, how could it do otherwise than to brighten the energy of thought?
Irrespective of the reality of our situation, our thoughts brighten and on go the rose colored glasses!
Similarly, when our thought processes (Mercury) are combined with our manner or sense of aesthetics, attraction and social graces (Venus) our thinking takes on a manner of beauty, balance and diplomacy that will potentially view the world similarly, with a lack of reality. We see the beauty that we want to see!
Now, if we are to bring Jupiter into the mix as well, we will experience an expansion of confidence (Jupiter), we will perceive our thoughts and manner of thinking (Mercury) as having an element of wisdom, trust and faith in life! With that we will often add the experience of Spirituality to the mix.
Idealism can be so powerful and beautiful and can assist us with the difficulties of our lives. It can bring us the encouragement that we need to carry on, to continue moving forward in the face of, even extreme, difficulties. This is the side of idealism that is most useful, it tells us, β€œyes” we are able, and nothing can stop us! Confidence pushes us forward!
If we are heading in the right direction, with the right intensions and a solid support system, this energy can propel our lives forward beautifully. If, on the other hand, we experience the sense that nothing can stop us when we are not heading in the right direction, when we do not have what it takes energetically, when we do not have the necessary support, we can get ourselves in all manner of trouble!
Idealism can bring us into areas we have no business being, possibly even bringing us into serious situations and extreme danger. In certain circumstances, idealism can move us through fantasy and toward disillusionment while we may not even notice that there is a problem. Life can crash down around us while we are deep in allusion and simply not paying attention to reality
It is very common for those of us who had the experience (privilege or disadvantage) of coming into our early adulthood during the turbulent, and very idealistic 1960’s to have serious issues if we have this signature of idealism in our horoscopes!
How many of us have struggled to find a realistic reality to build a productive life on after coming of age in the midst of a time of such a level of unrealistic idealism? How many of us have spent varying amounts of time and energy stuck in the past with all of its beautiful fantasy? Ah, it was a beautiful dreamy time! Having to face the real world after growing up in such a time has been a challenge for so many!
Has the experience of disillusionment been so strong that many of us have closed ourselves off to the good within idealism? Alternatively, have we been able to find a place to express/experience the idealism of that time and still move forward into a reality that has been able to support our adult lives?

Perspective on Ease & Difficulty

Interesting, isn’t it, how we observe our own lives? Sometimes it feels as though we are simply watching a story play out. Sometimes that story seems to have shocking and unexpected surprises and yet, if we really pay attention, there have always been clues. If we really had our eyes open we would not be so surprised!

I feel my life slipping into places that I saw glimmers of as a child. Glimpses and glimmers that I managed to avoid looking at directly for the next 40 years!

It is interesting also, how often we avoid what is the best for us. We can spend years wasting time and a ton of energy on what is absolutely not in our best interest.

As we look at our own or another persons’ natal chart it is often painfully clear which areas are being avoided and which are consuming energy that could be better used elsewhere.

Grand Trines, or any strong Trine (a 120 degree aspect between planets) generally highlights an area that the person is very comfortable spending their time and energy on. Those are the areas that come easily to them. Trines are the gifts that we really don’t have to work for. It is satisfying to focus our energies on the places that do not take a great deal of work and yet seem to get immediate and positive results. When we have those areas in our lives (symbolized by strong Trine aspects) why would we move toward the more difficult areas (symbolized by Squares or Oppositions in the natal chart) that demand struggle and enduring effort?

Astrologers often encourage the idea that Trine aspects are the most wonderful thing we can have! There is no question that they certainly feel wonderful! And as we move in those areas we feel powerful and possibly smug, as though somehow we know how to make our lives work. For us, in this areal, Life Works!

For me it has been my powerful Aries Moon in the 7th house (relationship) Trining my 7 planet stellium in the 11th house (love received). I have spent the past 40 years pouring my heart and soul into Relationships – those with a capital “R”! I have always believed that I had a special gift regarding relationships! HA! I have had wonderful relationships in my life. Looking back, over the years, I can truly say that I still love and maintain an inner devotion to each and every one of the folks I have been in long term relationships with throughout my life. I had an astrologer look at my chart when I was young and tell me that I would be married 7 times!

Wow! Seven!

My seventh long term relationship ended about 9 months ago and I believe that I am done with relationships, of that type, in my life. I am shocked to discover that I am not looking for, or interested in, romantic connection of any sort.

Is that really me speaking!? It is difficult and surreal for me to say that even now. Relationship has been the one constant in my life. I have ALWAYS had a partner (or more than one!). Shifting this life long pattern and becoming comfortable being alone is a difficult transition! Now it is time to learn real independence, learn to live on my own, to rely on other types of relationships. It is time now to pour energy into the relationships I have with my clients. With seven planets in the 11th house perhaps I can also find what friendship means!

As Saturn has very recently moved into my first house, I am ready to do the work that Saturn has teased me with since I was a child! To do that work, I must be alone, to take time away from Relationship, away from that easy, beautiful Trine between my Aries Moon and my Leo stellium!

I remember reading a book titled “The Wisdom of Solitude” (not the new book by the same name) when I was in high school. I remember knowing there was a draw to that space of solitude, but the world of relationships seduced me into years of avoidance.

When I look at my chart with it’s packed 11th house – full of Leo planets and my Aries Moon in the 7th, I can certainly understand why the draw to solitude lost its grip as i moved into a very different life. In order to follow that path of solitude I would have chosen the harder path, I would have faced Saturn’s square to all my Leo planets. That square has followed me always, has called to me, has offered me her hand, many many times.

I have tried to keep the fires burning without the solid earth that Saturn represents. I hope I am not too late to follow the teachings of Saturn squaring all those planets.

As Saturn has moved into my 1st forcing me to face the work ahead and Uranus moved into my 7th uprooting all my previous thoughts and ideas of Relationship. My life is certainly not where I thought it would be. I wonder how long until I will get accustomed to where it is. I feel the soothing energy of solitude. I feel the inner growth and I know it is not an easy path for me. Age brings with it the wisdom to understand the usefulness of solitude.

Always appreciate your Trines, those areas of life that work without difficult effort! On the other hand, don’t underestimate the insistence of your squares and oppositions as they are the places that bring the most important, profound and lasting growth and wisdom.

Where are the areas of your life that you are avoiding because it seems easier in the moment? A good look at your Astrological horoscope can bring a great new perspective to your life.

On the Brink of Another New Year ~ 2010!

Once again we are at the brink of a New Year – 2010!

As another year’s calendar comes to a close, we embark on familiar cultural rituals. We look back. We look forward. We make plans to celebrate, we make resolutions and we hope that the coming year will be better than the last!

As 2009 comes to an end, take the time to contemplate, to consider your current, past and future circumstances. Are you in a better situation: happier, healthier than you were at the end of 2008? or are your circumstances and situation worse/more difficult? Does it seem almost as though you are living a completely different life than the one you were living last year? or does it all seem very similar? Did the changes you intended last year come to pass or are you still repeating all those same old patterns?

Adjust your lens from the past into the future… do you imagine next December 31st looking much the same or very different from how your life looks tonight? Do you have the energy, can you create what you want in the upcoming year?

The entire landscape of our lives will likely appear vastly different 365 days from now! (Indeed, dramatic changes could occur in the next half hour, but we’ll keep focused on the year ahead!)

We have no way of knowing as one year ends if we will even be here to celebrate the ending of the next. We do not know who will be by our side. Perhaps the same people that are with you tonight? Perhaps people you you have only recently met or people you have never met or even someone yet to be born will be by your side!? Indeed, you may be alone next year – by choice or by circumstance!
There are no crystal balls and absolutley no indication of the minor or considerable pains and/or pleasures ahead.

Perhaps the purpose of this yearly celebration is simply to mark the passage of time. With this ritual celebration we drive a stake into the ground to remind ourselves of where we stood at this time, to distinguish with this celebration, one year from the next.

I suspect that many of us have memories of New Years Eve celebrations where we were with people and in circumstances that were not good for us, situations that we did not know how to get out of easily. Perhaps we were expected to do things a certain way and did not know how to say what we really wanted. Perhaps we were afraid of what that act, of seeming rebellion, would create in the coming year and we were not ready to face those changes.

We have only a certain amount of control regarding how the coming year unfolds. Circumstances, “acts of god” and the actions of others are outside of our control. What we can control, however, is how we spend this last night of the year and the first day of the new year.

Remember the song, popular in the early 70’s “Love The One You’re With”…. many of us are afraid to be alone, particularly on this night that we have been taught we must ‘party’, drink, live it up, celebrate….. that is the ritual….

So, how about this year? Who are you spending your New Year’s Celebration with? And what are you doing with your evening and your day tomorrow? Are you where you want to be? With who you want to be with?

Let this evening and your day tomorrow reflect what you want for the coming year! You owe it to yourself and to all those you love to be true to yourself and honest enough in your relationships to face the future coming from a place of clarity and self acceptance!

It is very likely that there will be both pain and pleasure in the upcoming year. The trick is to accept each as it comes. Open your heart and watch with curiosity as the year unfolds!

11 years ago today my mom died. Perhaps that event, coming on a day of traditional celebration, has brought a different light to my understanding of the importance of this day. Tonight I will spend Joyfully alone. I will enjoy the time of solitude, time to contemplate the year behind and the year ahead.

Moving on, respecting and releasing what is past – making the space for what will come.

An Interesting Holiday Indeed! 2009

We approach the holiday season with much excitement & expectation. However, we know that this is a difficult season for many. Think of your friends, family, neighbors, even your co-workers who are struggling through this time All too many of them/us have absorbed unrealistic images and ideals of what the holiday season should be.
In our minds, we have such beautiful pictures of the perfect holiday!
  • Our perfect home is always clean and beautifully decorated, inside and out!
  • Our perfect family always treats each other with love and respect in every moment!
  • Our perfect temperament has no stress about time, family dynamics or how to pay the bills when they come due!

In our sweet imagination we bake cookies with our children, our moms and grandmas, sit around a warm fire, sing carols and kiss our perfect partner under the mistletoe!

Our imagination holds limitless bliss!
It is difficult to avoid the thought that we have somehow failed our families and ourselves when the reality of our lives do not match up to this ideal fantasy!

The Astrological transits, the issues, intensity, energies and how we are affected by them vary each year.

The one constant is the Sun – each year the Sun moves from Sagittarius into Capricorn on December 21st or 22nd. This coincides with our shift from having fun with holiday preparation to serious stress about what we HAVE to get done in just a few short days! After beginning the preparation in late November with joyful expectations we now realize that there are limits on our time, our finances, our patience and our energy. With Capricorn comes the concern that we have spent too much money and yet have not done as much as we ‘should‘! Our stress builds as we approach this self imposed finish line!
The year 2009 exists with the heavy background of Saturn squaring Pluto, which demands transformation of, that which we have considered, the steady grounding forces in our lives. The earth has shaken and we know the process is not yet over.

Jupiter & Neptune are together for a bit longer after spending most of the year side by side. With this combination we sense hope and acceptance of something larger than ourselves at work in this process. Keep this energy close to you as you deal with the more challenging elements of your family this holiday season.
Expand your acceptance. This is your family, your clan, chosen or not!
It is what it is – they are who they are, just as you are.
Keep your heart open!
Jupiter and Neptune side by side in Aquarius will help immeasurably!
The combination of Saturn square Pluto, and Jupiter conjunct Neptune speaks of the futility of attempting to gain or maintain any level of control over the actions of others or over the course of many aspects of our existence. Acceptance will open the heart and heal a lot of wounds.
This week with the Sun approaching conjunction with Pluto (exact on Thursday, December 24, 2009) our attention turns toward very serious issues. Ask yourself what you have to offer that is of deep and abiding significance. What do you have to offer to your loved ones, your community, your world? Step away from the stress of this holiday season – take a deep look at your personal values. What is the value you have to offer? How are you able to put this value into action now? Perhaps your growing dissatisfaction and frustration would resolve itself if you were to find that answer and begin the steps to put it into action.
The energy of transiting Mars (retrograde) is turned inward, offering us the opportunity to slow down and work below the surface, to sit quietly and find what is real & true for ourselves. Watch the quality of our communications and our tendencies toward frustration, anger and aggression.
Many of us are spending time with families during these holidays. It is a great time to practice being in relationship, without addenda. Take the time, make the effort to observe ourselves and those we are in relationship with.

Take time to allow the act of observation to slow down the need to respond.

Family dynamics often bring up reactions we may later regret. During the retrograde cycle of Mars, please understand that any acts of aggression, whether physical or verbal, will end badly for the aggressor. Observation is not necessarily a passive act! Observation is an act that will serve you well in many difficult and uncomfortable situations. As your skills of observation deepen you will realize how the ability to observe rather than react will enable you to chose actions that you will not need to later regret – you will also learn much that will surprise you about yourself!
Transiting Mercury also turns retrograde on Saturday December 26th reminding us to also slow down our mental activity and pay careful attention to our communications as well.

This is indeed an interesting holiday season! As you spend time with family and loved ones watch your communications, your tendencies toward anger, frustrations and aggression. Develop skills of observation and skills of patience. Be patient with yourself and others, observe your behavior and learn from it.

Breathe deeply and bring understanding and love to the table. Find your gifts and share them with love.

Are you at a crossroad in your life? Are your circumstances other than what you expected?

We can meet for an individual consultations (Burlington, Vermont), by telephone, or on SKYPE!

Life Transitions Require New Perspectives!

It is my goal to empower you in the exploration of the past, present and future of your life.

Let's talk. There is so much to learn and understand.
