Welcome to 2023!  A New Year Begins!

We begin the year with both Mars and Mercury retrograde. Mars will station direct on January 12, and Mercury on January 18th. Don’t dive headfirst into big new plans. Hold steady. First, we need to get through the emotional Full Moon on January 6th and even after that, hold steady.

Continue giving yourself a bit more time. It will be worth the wait.

On January 22nd when Uranus stations direct, all systems are GO! At that point, all planets are moving direct until Mercury’s next retrograde period which starts on April 21st.

THE VALUE OF FREEDOM AND UNIQUE EXPRESSION

The week begins with the Moon continuing its path through the stable calm realm of Taurus.  On an emotional level, you are looking for pleasure and the security that comes with stability and beauty. Settle in and take some practical steps forward. Taurus is the sign of grounded stability, it is a very physical sign that can be as immovable as the earth itself. Taurus asks that we slow down and deliberately set all hurry aside.

At 9:44 PM ET, the Moon enters Gemini. Even as you are preparing for sleep use your intellect and your voice. Your mind may become busy and sleep will come more easily if you explore and share ideas before turning out the lights.

Venus, the planet that represents love, beauty, and personal values, has been moving through Capricorn since December 9th. While in Capricorn our approach to issues of love, resources, and finances was serious, conservative, and mature. Now, at 9:09 PM ET Venus enters Aquarius, shifting our values in love to a future-oriented curiosity. How can love and partnership reflect the reality of your unique needs and desires? We are likely to be more interested in friendships than in romantic partnerships at this time. We value freedom and independence under this influence. Encourage your partners and friends to express themselves freely without judgment. Venus will remain in Aquarius until January 26th.

A DAY OF CURIOSITY AND CONVERSATION

The Moon continues its passage through Gemini today, keeping us on our toes and engaging with ideas and conversations with others. When the Moon is in this mutable air sign Gemini our thoughts will move quickly over a variety of topics with a rather light hand. The Gemini Moon is light-hearted and not interested in deep, profound, or difficult topics.

Engage with others in social gatherings. Find folks willing to share interesting conversations. Encourage yourself and others to be curious about many ideas, topics, and what others think.

Stimulating conversations and mental gymnastics will help stabilize your emotions. Gemini is a quick-moving sign, and without mental stimulation, it is easy to become irritable or anxious. Keep your mind occupied with a variety of light-hearted tasks.  At 2:48 PM ET, the Moon conjunct Mars may bring frustration or anger to the fore. Do your best to not engage it, and it will pass without incident.

Shortly after midnight, tonight, Venus forms a sweet sextile aspect to Jupiter. This is a lovely transiting aspect that you will feel building throughout the day. This is a great time for enjoying the company of friends and loved ones. Everyone will feel more open, warm, and loving than usual. Look forward to a day of generosity and pleasure tomorrow.

Shortly after midnight last night Venus formed a sweet supportive sextile aspect to Jupiter. This will bring a fabulous influence to both today and tomorrow. This transit feels great and can relieve personal tensions and tension in your relationships with others. Keep your eyes open to where you can help others and receive assistance as well.

This is a great time to fall in love, rekindle love, or simply feel happy in whatever circumstance you find yourself in. Generosity is a great practice today. What can you offer or give to another that will help them even as it leaves you feeling wonderful about your ability to help another? This lovely transit will help in whatever circumstances you find yourself in.

The Moon remains in chatty, lighthearted Gemini throughout the day. With Mercury (Gemini’s ruling planet) still retrograde anticipate some challenges in your communications. You may feel the need to censor your words and rely more on nonverbal communication. Regardless, this day holds the bright and shiny energy of Venus in a sweet aspect to expansive Jupiter. Show love without words.

NEW PERSPECTIVES BRING NEW DIRECTIONS

When the Moon enters Cancer at 9:15 AM ET your emotions become more sensitive and deep. You may want to close the door and hunker down with trusted family members and loved ones. Because of Cancer’s reputation for such deep sensitivity, it can be easy to forget how strong the energy of Cancer is. Cancer is a cardinal water sign and is stronger than you may expect. When the Moon is in Cancer you can come to the defense of those in need with more strength and tenacity than you realize. 
At 11:43 AM ET the Sun forms a flowing trine aspect to Uranus. This brings unexpected news that brings excitement or great anxiety. We will not all experience it in the same manner. Considering that what excites you can bring deep anxiety to others, we must understand that this is a transit that will be experienced in very different ways by different folks. For everyone, it will bring something that is not anticipated. 
 
Watch for news that may turn your world or your thinking upside down. Perhaps you are left wanting more. Unpredictability is in the air and the tendency to dance to a different drummer is high on your list of priorities. 
 
Plan to take a break from your normal routines and look at the world through a different lens. Engage yourself in an adventure that will show you a new perspective and move you in a new direction.

CANCER FULL MOON: FIERCE PROTECTION

Today we reach the Full Moon at 16° Cancer occurs at 6:08 PM ET. Cancer, ruled by the Moon itself, offers valuable insights on how to work with deep emotions as they relate to family dynamics. You can expect yourself and others to feel varying degrees of sensitivity and moodiness throughout the day.

You long to close the door and hunker down with those closest to you. Issues of work/ home balance may come into focus supporting finding a healthier way forward in the new year. Find the house that holds Cancer in your natal chart. This is the area of your life where fierce protection is activated. This is also the area of your life within which to celebrate the illumination of this Cancer Full Moon.

At this Full Moon, notice what has grown from the seed that you planted at the Capricorn New Moon on December 23rd. In exploring the larger cycle, consider what has grown from what began at the Cancer New Moon on June 28th, 2022. Full Moons bring us to a culmination point, a time to adjust or release any misgrowth that has occurred in those two overlapping cycles.

This Full Moon is very close to forming a sextile to Uranus, the planet of sudden change and rebellion. This offers innovative new approaches to managing emotions within challenging family dynamics.

CLARITY AND FOCUS

With the Moon in Cancer, you may simply want to hunker down and spend time at home with those you love. The moods and the feelings you carry and those you pick up from others will be a primary influence today. Intellectually you may not be able to make sense of your feeling but don’t let that inhibit your feeling them.

We sometimes focus so much on the sensitivity of Cancer as a water sign that we need to be reminded that it is also a cardinal sign. The Cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Cardinal signs are active signs that initiate action. The point with Cancer is to use your considerable sensitivities to push you to take action for positive change. Sometimes it feels that our emotions can overwhelm us, but we can and must put those emotions to work. That is the real job of today. Allow your emotions to move you to action.

At 7:56 AM ET, the Sun conjunct retrograde Mercury. This is called the inferior conjunction and it occurs at the halfway point through the retrograde period. At the inferior conjunction, your mind is clear and focused, don’t take that to mean it is time to move forward with projects and plans. Mercury is still retrograde. Use this mental clarity to reflect on what you have learned since the retrograde began on December 29th. Pay attention and record great ideas that arrive now, but please wait to implement them. Don’t let impatience or impulsiveness get the best of you.

At 9:40 PM ET, the Moon, tired from so much emotion, enters Leo. For the next few days, your attention will turn to issues of playfulness and generosity. Leo is ruled by the Sun and brings the potential for enthusiasm and optimism. Get a good night’s sleep and be ready to embrace playful generosity tomorrow.

NEW PATTERNS OF THOUGHT

Today the Moon continues through Leo offering playfulness and enthusiasm. Plan to spend the day in playful or creative endeavors. All else being equal, the Leo Moon simply feels good. Leo is a very personal self-oriented sign.

When the Moon is in Leo, we seek a greater level of attention and dramatic expression. We want to exude playfulness, courage, and confidence. While the Moon passes through Leo is also a great time for romantic and creative activities. It is important not to let petty or unimportant ego issues get in the way of grand sell expression.

At 6:22 PM ET Mercury trine Uranus. Due to Mercury’s retrograde this is an ongoing story that began on or near December 22nd, takes a turn now, and will finish up on or near January 29th. Get clear about the changes in your thinking during this period of time. Share your unusual ideas and unique perspectives that have been building clarity in your mind. You may be surprised at how easily you can express complex ideas.

You may receive welcome and unexpected news. You may have unusual experiences that will wake your mind to new patterns of thought.

I do not consider every aspect that the Moon makes each day as they can be numerous and give rise to fleeting moods. The aspects under consideration are conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines, and oppositions. The planets I work with are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Mundane Astrology vs Natal Astrology

Tracking the movement of the planetary bodies and how these movements impact humans is called Mundane Astrology. In using Mundane astrology in this way, the considerations are quite general as we are speaking to the public rather than individuals. This branch of astrology provides a way to connect with the public on a daily basis which is why you see so much of it on social media.
I find Mundane astrology fascinating and it is an integral tool of my craft. However, my true love is Natal astrology which is the study and exploration of an individual’s birth chart. Natal astrology is intensely personal as it reflects the unique life and path of each individual. Natal astrology does not lend itself so easily to daily posts directed to the general public.

My True Love of Natal Astrology: Consulting Clients & Mentoring Students

Writing this blog takes an inordinate amount of my time and I find that using my time this way is beginning to wear thin. I know that my time and attention are best used in other ways.
I love being of service to folks in the exploration and deep understanding of their unique lives with consultations and readings. My other deep love is in teaching a new generation of astrologers as they develop the skills to become consulting astrologers. I am writing a book to support folks in developing the skills needed to become effective and compassionate astrologers. I am currently mentoring a handful of students and have space in my schedule for one or two more.
My mentorship is for folks who want to become consulting astrologers or for astrologers who want to become better at their craft. The mentorship program can be adapted for other applications as well. If you want to dig very deep and understand the language behind consultations and readings, the mentorship will work for you as well.
