The Elements: Fire, Earth, Air, Water (by Jennie Date)

THE EARLY ATTRACTION OF THE ELEMENTS

by Jennie Date (consulting astrologer for Astrolore)

First and foremost, astrology, as previously discussed, is providing me with a professional track that I never thought possible.  With the powerful language of astrology I am able to help people find insight into their own hidden motivations and gain an objective perspective so they might detach and heal from their deepest wounds.

But let’s take a step back. It has been over the course of many years that the impact of astrology has truly sunk in.

Relationships, as is true for most of us, have been a potent source of satisfaction and frustration for me.

Early on in my relational navigations, I found that the Western astrological Elements of FIRE, EARTH, AIR, and WATER could provide extremely helpful insights into how we relate with others.

Essentially, the Elements are the underlying backbone of every chart, giving rise to all of the twelve signs. Understanding how the forces of these elements interact give us a deeper understanding of our charts, ourselves, and others.

I love the simplicity of the four symbols and resonate with the rich imagery they suggest. The number four offers a profound stability, like the four seasons, the four-part moon cycle, and the four directions.

Each of us reflects the unique blend and balance of the elements in our horoscope (Natal Chart).

How we express this balance depends upon our self-awareness, our path, and our intentions for wielding personal power.

It is useful to know which of these energies dominate our personality and how we relate to other people through them. This balance in our lives and in nature is a moving process, kind of like walking back and forth across a seesaw, striving to find the midpoint over and over again.

The Four Elements are:

the creative, enthusiastic, assertive force of Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius);

the steady, practical building energy of Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn);

the idea-driven, intellectual, inventor vibe of Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius);

and the deep, resourceful, emotional content of Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).

These Four Elements intersect and combine in six ways, reflected in the poetry below.

THE FOUR ELEMENTS
by Jennie Date

Fire meets Earth, powerful and effective

A volcano erupts across the sky after seething dormant for millennia

A potter melds clay, fine porcelain created, a vessel

An abundance of earth snuffs the flame into darkness

An abundance of fire scorches the earth beyond desert.

(Aries, Leo, Sagittarius inspires Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo)

Air and Fire collide, an easy explosive combination

Balanced, the hearth fire burns, community gathers around for spirited discourse

Or sheets of fire in a wildfire, taking thousands of acres, a cleansing process in the

long view, destruction of the current paradigm

A fire being drained of air becomes smoke, blinding the eyes of all.

(Libra, Aquarius, Gemini collides with Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

Fire and Water steam

The geyser cascades shots of elemental brilliance from the earth’s crust

A natural sauna making sweat, passionate embrace

Water drowns the flame, dominates or

Fire scalds the bottom of the kettle as water disappears into steam.

(Aries, Leo, Sagittarius steams up Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

Air and Earth, the making of a canyon

Wind whips across the spires of red Utah, pulling grains of sand in an art-form

The unbridled freedom of dust particles across the planet, or the deep earth canyon

trapping air in a spiral dance

An ancient interplay between matter and energy, stillness and movement

The dust devil dances in the desert.

(Libra, Aquarius, & Gemini dances with Capricorn, Taurus, & Virgo)

Air And Water, surfing the waves of Hawai’i

Spray blows off the top, the inexorable power of water tickled by the wind sprite

Sheets of rain blown upside down, a brief flouting of the natural order of things

Mental concentration meets the well of compassion

Or, unbalanced, mindless heart*, sensitivity without focus

Or heartless mind*, cutthroat cerebral control.

(Libra, Aquarius, & Gemini surfs with Cancer, Scorpio, &Pisces)

Water and Earth, such a natural attraction

Water penetrates the opaqueness of the Earth, loosening it

Continuing until the dam breaks, crashing towards the ocean to be swallowed

A marsh, riparian habitat, elegantly designed for filtration, the natural proclivity of

the Earth to cleanse and renew

A mudslide in the Californian redwoods, saturation reached.

(Cancer, Scorpio, & Pisces nourishes Capricorn, Taurus, & Virgo)
